FAQs About Wood Pellets

Q: How long does one bag of pellets burn?

A: According to the Pellet Fuels Institute, a 40-lb bag of pellet fuel can provide up to 24 hours of solid heat. A winter’s supply of wood pellets is about 100-150 bags—depending on climatic and lifestyle variations.

Q: Where can I find Hay Creek premium wood fuel pellets?

A: We have distributors all over Wisconsin. Check out our dealer page, to find a source near you. If you don’t see one in your area, we’re happy to talk to you about how to become a retailer that can provide a supply of pellets in your community.

Q: Do you harvest trees to make your wood pellets?

No. We reclaim wood that might otherwise be sitting in a landfill! We grind up broken pallets and scrap wood and remove all of the metal and debris, and then compact the shavings into wood fuelt pellets. These wood products have outgrown their use in the packaging industry, but are naturally very dry wood after being used as pallets for a while. This makes the scrap wood perfect for pellets.

Q: Why are pellets considered biomass energy?

Biomass is any organic biological material, derived from living organisms, that stores energy from the sun. The wood we use to make our pellets was once part of a living tree, therefore, our product is considered to be a biomass fuel source.

Q: How many bags are on a one-ton skid?

A: A ton of pellets is 50 bags. Each bag weighs 40 pounds.

Q: Why are my wood pellets shiny?

A: Lignin, which is a naturally-occurring substance in wood, rises to the surface during wood pellet production and leaves the pellets smooth and shiny. Lignin also acts as a natural glue and is what holds the pellet together. Pellets are 100% wood and there is no other binding agent in them but the natural lignin in the wood.
